Methodology

To calculate the chain rating, we took the number of known hotels with decent WiFi compared to the total number of hotels in the chain, including hotels where WiFi has not been tested. Currently, we consider WiFi that is faster than 5 Mbps to be “decent.” This speed might be considered quite low for home or office Internet, but given the poor overall WiFi quality in hotels, such a speed standard is a good first step. Moving forward, we will adjust this criterion as the situation of hotel WiFi improves around the world.

For the Top 100 Hotels list, we calculated the adjusted expected speed for each hotel. There are a few considerations that you should take into account. First of all, the speed varies depending on time of the day and the day of the week. Therefore, test speed results taken in similar conditions should share the same weight. Then, it should be considered that the relation between WiFi speed and benefits we get from it is not linear. For example, 5 Mbps is drastically better than 1 Mbps, since it allows you to participate in new activities, such as watching streaming videos in good resolution. Furthermore, at 5 Mbps, everything works noticeably faster. However, after certain limits, speed increase benefits decline, because you don’t usually use the full available bandwidth even when you can still watch streaming videos at maximum quality (e.g. full HD). Due to this effect, we use a logarithmic scale to calculate an adjusted expected speed.
